Julie A. Sugita is a California Licensed Professional Fiduciary
(license #447) as well as a National Certified Guardian (NCG). As a former practicing periodontist (dental specialist), Julie was licensed by the State of California to practice dentistry until health issues created another direction on her career path. With many elderly patients in her dental practice, Julie found joy in helping patients maintain dental health and function, often adapting treatment options to patients’ multiple medical conditions and medications.
Having been a full-time caregiver to her mother-in-law during her illness with Alzheimer’s Disease, Julie brings to this service a unique personal understanding of caregiver roles, and the knowledge that not every family member has the skills to provide this critical and usually stressful care to a loved one. It was during this experience that Julie developed a strong appreciation for “many helpful hands along the journey.” It is her belief that a Professional Fiduciary can provide just those helpful hands especially when dealing with complex healthcare concerns and conditions. Many times, family members aren’t available or lack the needed skills or knowledge of healthcare issues.
Enhancing her healthcare background with a Master’s of Science degree in Gerontology from San Diego State University, Julie brings a knowledge of the aging field to her business, and has most recently worked for LightBridge Hospice Community Foundation in San Diego, developing community outreach and educational programs for the foundation that compliments the traditional care offered through LightBridge Hospice and Palliative Care. While at the University, Dr. Sugita pioneered a training symposium for oral healthcare providers on their role as mandated reporters of Elder Abuse and Neglect, a topic with which many dentists, hygienists and assistants are unfamiliar. She has authored an article based on her research, which has been accepted for publication in the Journal of Elder Abuse and Neglect.
Julie brings her passion for improving the quality of seniors’ lives to her position as a patient volunteer with LightBridge Hospice and as a volunteer with East County Meals On Wheels. “The smiles I see when I visit with seniors on my MOW route bring me immense joy. Often we are the only friendly face these lovely people see on any given day.” An 11th Hour volunteer with LightBridge Hospice as well, Julie is part of a specialized group of hospice volunteers who provide presence, comfort and companionship to patients in their final hours who do not have family members able to be with them.
Julie is a member of the Board of Directors and Chair of the Glenner Memory Care Centers and the LightBridge Hospice Community Foundation. She lives in San Diego’s East County with her husband, three children and many four-legged friends.
